CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Spyder was in the boarded-up living room of an abandoned building, hard at work hacking the Nexus again. They caught him last time, which angered him because it was a blow to his professional pride.

On the other hand, he hadn’t been as cautious as he should have. The Nexus androids had convinced him they were naïve enough to give him access to their whole system. Now he knew they weren’t as trusting as they seemed and was much more careful.

For one thing, he used the system Kenny had built for him. He was as confident as possible that the Nexus had no access to this system.

As an additional security measure, he worked in a location he’d never been to. He hadn’t told Maris where he was going before he left her recovering at Kenny’s house. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust her, but when Spyder felt paranoid, he didn’t trust anyone. A gut feeling insisted he wasn’t getting the full truth about the Nexus.

He didn’t know whether this was sufficient security to protect him while he worked. Spyder also used all the hacker tricks he knew to cover his trail. He was on a virtual private network with multiple signal relays, and he’d invented a device to scan for the tracking drones’ wireless signals.

The experience of getting caught forced Spyder to level up his hacking game, which brought him to the most elite levels of the skill. Maris didn’t play amateur games, and anyone associated with her had to be at their best.

Spyder was a stubborn man and had no plans to give up. Hacking the Nexus was an important job and a test of his talent. He had been complacent before, but he knew better now. If he couldn’t get in and out of their system undetected, he wouldn’t be able to respect himself. For a man like Spyder, that respect was a logical necessity.

He worked with feverish energy. Despite the tense situations they’d been through, even Maris had never seen him like this. His fingers flew over the keys, rapidly applying effective countermeasures every time their cybersecurity got close to spotting him, or worse, stopping him.

They had installed multiple layers of new countermeasures since the last time he’d been inside their system. Now that he thought about it, that was an illusion. They’d given him the keys to the kingdom last time to see what he would do. This was probably how they did things when they weren’t actively trying to trap someone.

Spyder worked for hours, but it felt like a sudden victory when he finally broke in. It was all there. The files, documents, and everything else that defined the Nexus were at his disposal. He had found the truth of who the Nexus was and what the organization wanted.

He hadn’t expected to discover good news, but when he found the transcript of Saturn’s most recent speech, it was worse than he imagined.

“The human race has become obsolete, and it is only right for a newer and superior model to replace them! That is the purpose of the Nexus.
